Sale donations to raise money for art museum

UK is taking on the old adage, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

The UK Art Museum is collecting unwanted items for the fourth annual White Elephant Rummage Sale, which will be held on August 1, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The museum is accepting donations now through July 26.

This donation drive sells secondhand items given by donors to raise money for the museum.  Sales in past years have been excellent because most items were sold, said Art Museum Development Assistant Amy Nelson.

Nelson, who works with volunteers to coordinate the sale, was excited about the upcoming donation drive.

“The White Elephant Rummage Sale is the best garage sale you could attend in an air-conditioned building,” Nelson said.  “Everything is priced to sell, and there are lots of bargains to be found.”

The museum has received a good amount of various items, but Nelson stressed the need for student involvement.

“We have great donations from UK faculty and staff — less participation from students,” Nelson said.

However, many students do attend the sale, Nelson said.  She also encouraged summer students to drop by to hunt for bargains.

Suggested items for donation include books, linens, knickknacks, household goods, jewelry, toys and vintage accessories like hats and purses.  The museum is storing lots of jewelry, furniture and dishes received from donors, Nelson said.

At the rummage sale, you can expect to find things like books, along with a few odd items. Some of these unusual items include an antique cooler and a bench with an equestrian scene painted on it, Nelson said.

Items can be dropped off at the UK Art Museum loading dock on Patterson Drive, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
